All three major averages posted gains for the third consecutive week, lifted by solid quarterly earnings and positive economic data. Earnings season ramps up next week, with five of the Super Six mega-cap stocks delivering results. Employment numbers are the most important economic data, with Friday's January nonfarm payrolls report carrying the most weight. TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares surged higher on Wednesday, cheered by a rally on Wall Street that was one of the best days of the year following a surprisingly encouraging report on inflation. “Accordingly, we expect GDP growth to slow from 1.7% this year to 0.5% in 2024,” he said in a commentary. Tuesday on Wall Street, the S&P 500 jumped 1.9% for its best day since April and hit a two-month high, closing at 4,495.70. On Wall Street, real-estate stocks and others beaten down particularly hard by higher rates soared to some of the market's biggest gains. Elsewhere on Wall Street, Home Depot rallied 5.4% after reporting stronger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected.

Real estate stocks extend losses as rates soar

The S&P 500 real estate index (.SPLRCR) lost 0.7% on Friday after falling 3.5% on Thursday, which was its biggest daily decline since March when the banking sector was in crisis. This provided tempting returns for fixed-income assets, making the relatively high dividend payouts of Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) a little less tempting. While the Fed decided not to hike interest rates after its meeting on Wednesday, it indicated that rates could stay at elevated levels for longer than investors had expected. On Friday the biggest real estate loser was American Tower (AMT.N), which finished down 1.8% while the biggest gainer was Extra Space Storage (EXR.N), up 1.2%. Alexandria Real Estate Equities (ARE.N) fell 1.6% on Friday, after losing 8% on Thursday and hitting its lowest level since 2016.

Leaving the office for dead may haunt investors

Those moves may herald a requirement for a return to a five-day office week. Average office attendance is only 35%, according to AWA, a consultancy that studied companies in 22 countries during April and May of 2023. Still, a mass exodus of tenants is unlikely as office leases in financial districts like London’s Canary Wharf have around 10 years left. But investors fear that once leases come up for renewal, companies will cull space. If bosses have it their way, office stocks may come back from the dead.

But Litt believes that the shift away from office working will also hurt life and sciences real estate, generally.

Arguments for calling a halt to the credit tightening were strengthened on Monday as early July business surveys for the euro area came in well below forecasts, showing a deepening contraction in overall activity this month. The euro dropped more than half a percent against the dollar as euro government debt yields fell back, with an indecisive weekend election result in Spain adding pressure. With the ongoing slide in manufacturing still the biggest drag and due in large part to China's spluttering post-Covid recovery, further turbulence in China's property markets will only increase the anxiety. For Wall St, the looming Fed decision dominates this week - with a check on U.S. July business surveys topping the data on Monday's calendar in another huge corporate earnings week. U.S. Treasury yields fell back, but the dollar (.DXY) climbed against the euro, yuan and sterling - also hit by disappointing UK business readings for July.

As part of its systemic oversold strategy, Citi identifies names it rates as buy and have been oversold. Here are some of the stocks Citi rates as buy and says are oversold. As the market reassesses the value of office properties, investors have been steering clear of many commercial real estate stocks. Greg Kuhl, a portfolio manager at Janus Henderson, said he likes the outlook for Alexandria Real Estate Equities , a pure-play owner of life sciences centers. Malhotra said he sees lab REITs as a "lower-beta way to play the volatile Life Sciences environment." The sector became an investor favorite during the pandemic as companies raced to develop a Covid-19 vaccine. Otherwise, a packed earnings season dominates this week's investment radar as more than a third of S&P500 companies report. Including Intel (INTC.O), those five tech stocks have accounted for two-thirds of the S&P500's gains this year - with the Artificial Intelligence craze sparked by the emergence of ChatGPT adding a new non-cyclical attraction to the sector. The Federal Reserve's prolonged period of low interest rates created many financial dislocations that are now flaring up. Case in point: Silicon Valley Bank imploded in a single day after surging interest rates caused it to sell a bond portfolio at a huge loss. The chaotic episode showed that the Fed's aggressive interest rate hiking regime could upend institutions that were once thought to be relatively stable. Since the Fed started raising interest rates in March 2021, bitcoin — formerly a highly touted inflation hedge — has plunged more than 65%. A surge in Japan's ailing yen from 32-year lows later on Friday, amid reports of out-of-hours Bank of Japan intervention in New York, saw a peak-to-trough drop in dollar/yen of almost 4%. There were wild swings again on Monday amid suspicion of further BoJ sales, even though officials refused to confirm the action. A weekend of political twists from Beijing to London only added to edgy market on Monday. China leadership China's Xi Jinping secured a precedent-breaking third leadership term on Sunday and introduced a top governing body stacked with loyalists. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index (.HSI) has now underperformed MSCI's broadest global stock index by almost 50% over two years.
One approach that could help is by looking at the names most beloved by analysts heading into earnings. The e-commerce giant is slated to report earnings Thursday. Alphabet, which is set to report earnings Tuesday, has struggled in 2022, losing 30% in that time. The company is slated to report earnings Thursday. ServiceNow and Alexandria Real Estate have the most buy rating from analysts covering them at 83.5% each.
With this in mind, CNBC Pro set out to find Wall Street's favorite stable stocks. If a stock has a beta of less than 1, it tends to be less volatile than the broader market. Health care names Bio-Rad Laboratories and Zoetis have the highest potential upside of any stock on the list, FactSet data shows. The tech giant has a five-year beta of 0.94 and has buy ratings from 82% of analysts covering it. The video game maker has a five-year beta of 0.76 and has buy ratings from 55% of analysts covering it.
